Mayflower Club is established.

May 1, 1896

Named for the flower not the ship, it is founded by sisters Mrs. Charles Homans and Mrs. Oliver Peabody and meets initially at 6 Park Street. Mrs. J. Elliot Cabot is the first president. Dr. Robert Means Lawrence subsequently writes, “The object of the Club was solely to provide comfort and rest for its members. It was a social club for women, where mental improvement was ignored, and no petitions for objects of charity or philanthropy were allowed.” It was also known for prohibiting alcoholic beverages, in contrast with rival Chilton Club, which allowed them. The club eventually moves to the Union Club at 7 Park Street, and is dissolved in 1931.
